Articles ¬ The Source ¬ LymphedemaLymphedema is a specific type of edema where the lymphatic fluid accumulates due to the impairment of the movement of this fluid. This accumulation leads to swelling, which is seldom painful, but can limit movement of that area of the body and lead to infection and inflammation of the underlying tissue. The lymphatic system circulates in vessels just like our blood and is responsible for cleansing the system of impurities and fighting infection. Anything that interfers with the flow of lymphatic fluid can cause lymphedema. Common causes include; cancer surgery where some of the lymph nodes had to be removed, infection and radiation.
The lymphatic system mainly relies on the movement of the body to supply its circulation. Massage can be a very useful tool for decreasing the swelling from lymphedema, but it is strongly advised to seek out a massage therapist trained specifically in lymphatic massage, as massage that is too aggressive can worsen the problem.
It is important to remain hydrated by having at least four to six glasses of water daily and to avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can be dehydrating. Avoid foods that are greasy or high in saturated fats and foods that are high in refined sugar as all of these foods make lymph circulation more sluggish and can worsen the problem.
If the lymphedema is caused by inflammation or trauma to the area herbs such bromelain, ginger and curcumin could be very useful. If using bromelain for this purpose, make sure to use it between meals. Fresh Ginger root makes a great tea, using ½ teaspoon of the root shredded or chopped finely per cup of hot water.
Echinacea is a very useful herb if it is suspected that the lymphedema arouse from infection. Echinacea also has an affinity for healing the lymphatic system. If using Echinacea it works best in tincture form and the two main types; Angustifolia and Purpurea should be used in combination. Echinacea should not be used by anyone who is in their first trimester of pregnancy, has AIDS or an autoimmune condition, without supervision. Other herbs with an affinity for healing the lymphatic system include; Cleavers, Goldenseal, Mullein, Phytolacca and Lobelia.
Other therapies that a person may want to investigate who have lymphedema would include homeopathy and acupuncture. Lymphedema is a symptom of a more serious underlying problem. If this is an ailment that you dealing with make sure to remain under medical supervision.
