Naturopathic medicine believes that the body has the ability to heal itself and aims to help the body to do so through the use of many different therapies. Each visit to a naturopathic doctor is used to educate the patient in how their body responds to illness. They are also shown where their body is weakest and most prone to showing symptoms of their condition.
A naturopathic doctor will not only look at the presenting problem, but also on the person as a whole, including all aspects of their life. Although it is frequently termed alternative, naturopathic medicine is actually complementary in nature and can be used along with the advice of a medical doctor. “Conventional” or allopathic medicine, unlike naturopathic medicine, focuses on symptom relief and tends to treat illness through the use of procedures and substances that specifically act against the illness. Bacterial infections are therefore treated by antibiotics and inflammation by anti-inflammatories. While this certainly has it’s merits, it ignores the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
