Anti- Aging Medicine

Anti- Aging medicine has been known as such since 1993. A large part of the work that is behind this form of medicine is studying why the body ages the way that it does. Currently there are five theories of aging. Theory number one is the Inflammation theory. This theory claims that people age quickly and become ill due to chronic inflammation that occurs in the body due to lack of exercise, improper diet, dehydration and lack of sleep.

The second theory of aging is the hormonal theory. This is the theory that believes that once we hit somewhere in our 40's we have served our biological purpose (i.e. we have likely had children) and are no longer needed. Therefore, hormones such as melatonin, DHEA , HGH and our sex hormones begin to decline leaving us open to chronic illness and faster aging.

Theory number three is the Antioxidant theory. This theory states that we can age faster and be prone to chronic illness depending on the amount of oxidative stress placed on our body by free radical damage.

Next is the lifestyle theory which states that what we eat, drink and expose ourselves to can speed up or slow down the aging process. Lastly, is the detoxification theory. Our body can be easily overwhelmed by exposures to toxins in our food, air and water and these chemicals can get in the way of its proper functioning and increase inflammation. Some of symptoms that can arise from becoming toxic include; fatigue, lack of concentration, acne, bloating, headaches, dark circles under the eyes, weight gain and joint pain.

The purpose of Anti-Aging medicine is not to stop aging, but to help a person age as gracefully and as slowly as possible. It is a careful balance which must constantly be adjusted to keep all requirements for slowed aging in check.

Foods to eat more of to slow aging; dark leafy greens, extra virgin olive oil (not to be used for cooking), rosemary, turmeric, ginger, soy products, garlic and onions, berries, nuts, oats, wild cold water fish and orange vegetables.

Foods to avoid or greatly limit; sugar, sugar, sugar, and do not overeat.

A Matter of Patient Safety?

The August issue of a journal that I receive had an interesting, yet scary article. This article discussed at length the American Medical Association’s new resolution and how it could mean a lot of trouble for my peers in the U.S.A. If you are interested in the politics behind my profession as it fights to become more known and widely accepted. For more information, Naturopathy Digest

Stupid Product Alert!

There is a chewable fiber supplement on the market called Fiber Choice. They have just put out a new product with Calcium added. People are concerned that they do not get enough Calcium, but this product is not going to be very helpful. Rule #1: Do not take Calcium with high amounts of fiber as it will block its absorption. What were they thinking?
