Basic Lab ¬ Sulkowitch test ( urinary calcium test )The chemicals oxalic acid, ammonium oxalate and glacial acetic acid are added to distilled water and this mixture is then added to a urine sample causing the calcium to precipitate and to be measured. The amount of calcium in the urine directly correlates to the amount in the blood.
People who may want to have this performed; those with bone or teeth weakness, people with high blood pressure, those with osteoporosis or who are concerned about its prevention, with insomnia, brittle nails, frequent twitches around the eyes or leg cramps, with heart palpitations, or a dry mouth, anyone already taking calcium supplements to see if they are absorbing their remedy and on the correct dosage, have low energy and those with chronic illness or stress.
It is very unusual for calcium to be too high due to over consumption. The body goes to great lengths to keep the calcium levels at optimum levels in the blood and will take it out of the bones, muscles and teeth. This is the most common explanation for a score of 3 and 4. Reasons for high scores include; high protein diet, inflammation, chronic stress, high sugar or carbohydrate diet and diabetes.
- = Hypocalcemia Your calcium intake or absorption is very low
- = Low calcium You are absorbing some calcium, but need more either through dietary changes or supplements.
- = Normal Calcium Keep up the good work.
- = Hypercalcemia There is either an issue with inadequate intake or absorption of calcium.
- = Extreme Hypercalcemia There is a major issue with inadequate intake and/ or absorption of calcium
Decreased calcium absorption can be caused by; low intake of calcium, decreased stomach acid, high fat diet, high phosphorus diet (meat and pop) high fiber intake, high intake of bitter green vegetables, low vitamin D intake, low magnesium intake, decreased exercise and digestive inflammation.
If your score indicates that you need to improve your calcium intake or absorption, retest in 4- 6 weeks after the appropriate treatment have been implemented.
