Basic Lab ¬ Insulin Resistance or Pre - Diabetes TestInsulin resistance is referred to as pre-diabetes, because it precedes the development of type 2 diabetes. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas and stimulates the uptake of sugars into the tissues for utilization. With insulin resistance the body does not respond to the unsiln appropriately therefore forcing the body to produce more insulin than it normally would. Overtime the pancreas is not able to produce sufficient amounts of insulin leading to diabetes.
The following are factors and conditions that increase the risk of insulin resistance; over age 40, relative with diabetes, high risk ethnic group: Aboriginal, Asian, and African, history of impaired glucose tolerance or gestational diabetes, hypertension, overwight, polycistic ovarian disease, dyslipidemia, vascular disease and schizophrenia.
This test uses expired air from the lungs before and after ingesting C labeled glucose.
